Interrupted Journey Memorial

Since the University of Washington first opened its doors in 1861, thousands of students and alumni have served in the United States Armed Forces. The Interrupted Journey WWII Memorial Plaza was designed as a lasting memorial to WWII soldiers who were killed in action. Funded primarily by UW alumni who graduated in ‘44, ‘45, and ‘46, the monument was designed by Seattle artist Jon Gierlich and dedicated in 2000. The three rings encircling the pole represent the transition from peace, to war, to peace again, while bronze plaques on the flagpole bear the names of men and women who attended the University of Washington and lost their lives supporting war efforts between 1939 and 1945.

This plaza is one of several war memorials across campus. Other memorials include the Spanish Civil War Memorial outside the HUB, the WWI Honor Roll plaques at the Memorial Gateway, the Medal of Honor at the roundabout in Memorial Way, and Memorial Way itself, which is lined with 58 London Planetrees dedicated to 58 university-affiliated soldiers who gave their lives during WWI.
