Join a club(there are so many of them!!) and find a supportive community with similar passions and interests as you. It is so important to have a strong support system especially during your years at UW because classes and life in general can get challenging at times!

Seeing the cherry blossoms in the beginning of spring quarter! I recommend heading out really early one morning when it's not that crowded and just enjoying the flowers.

Don’t be afraid to reach out to your professors or TAs. They can seem intimidating at times, but they are here to help you! Professors are always thrilled when students go to their office hours to ask questions, and it’s a great way to establish relationships that you can maintain throughout your time at UW.

Attend Dawg Daze events! I met most of my friends at these events, and it was a memorable and welcoming experience when I came to the UW.

What advice do you have for new students?

Don't overdo it. Some of you may feel like it's all about the grades, all about the credits, and just work work work. While having motivation, determination, and caring about your grades are all good things, as with all things, they are only effective in moderation. Don't lose on new experiences. The interesting people and places around you and remember to take care of yourself. Get to know your peers, even us older students, we're all in the same boat. Enjoy this time so you can look back at it with a smile, it won't come again.

What is your favorite spot on campus and why?

The quad. In the spring it is full of light and beautiful cherry blossoms. In the fall when the trees are still full of leaves it makes you really feel like you are in Seattle. There is seriously no better place to be than the quad, whatever the occasion.

Regardless of classes being in person or not explore campus! Walk around, see it all. There is so much to see and exploring on and around campus. Regardless of classes are in person or not, seeing the campus of the institution I attend helped me feel connected to my school and excited for the future. Everyone should experience that as well!

If you're able to fit it in your schedule, be a part of at least one club, also known as a Registered Student Organization (RSO) here at the UW. Not only are you joining an RSO that caters to your academic, professional, and/or personal interests, but you're also finding a community of like-minded individuals. Being at a large, educational institution, finding the right community can be a challenge to some, but partaking in an RSO is a great way to be involved and find friends!

I think that going to sports games is a must. UW has talented teams and getting up early for game days was a highlight of my freshman year. Even if the students who attend have no knowledge of how the sport works, it's a bonding time for all students on campus.

What I have loved most about UW is how much professors care about the classes they teach and their students. When the pandemic hit and everyone was off campus, they worked so diligently to provide abundant resources so that the these difficult circumstances impacted our academic experience minimally. If anything good came from remote learning is that the professor who taught 300 student classes was able to feel like a close knit class like back in high school.

Coming to the UW can definitely be intimidating for a number of reasons, but this school provides so many options for new students to feel comfortable immediately. One of the must-do's as a new student is to try and find a new study area each time you need to study for the first few weeks of school. It can be overwhelming going to the same library or the same desk every day, so finding something new brings the excitement and energy that is needed to succeed in a new environment.

Take initiative in your experience here; raise your hand in class if you have a question, attend office hours if you're struggling, and join a club that seems interesting to you. Some of your best college friends or study buddies can be made if you reach out and embrace the scary feeling of putting yourself out there.

You don't need to be sure of anything yet. Your college journey should be an exploration of your interests, relationships, and morals. It's okay to be lost sometimes, just keep trying things you think will add a new sense of understanding of yourself. Remember you can do much of that here by taking the advantage of the different opportunities/resources of Udub.

What one thing would you say is a must-experience for new students?

I would say the CLUE tutoring/exam review sessions! I was hesitant to go to one of these my first quarter since I didn't know what it would be like but I've started going this quarter and I've found the sessions so helpful in reinforcing concepts I don't know that well. I also appreciate how the tutors are super friendly and always willing to answer any questions that anyone at the session has. This has definitely been a huge factor in keeping my grades up and I highly recommend everyone tries it out at least once!

What advice do you have for new students?

Utilize the 'audit my degree' feature on MyPlan as soon as possible! It's such a helpful tool and will help you efficiently plan out your time at the University. There's so many classes that are offered every quarter that it's easy to feel overwhelmed, but using this feature frequently will help alleviate some of the stress that comes with satisfying your requirements. Plus, with some prior planning, you could even graduate with a minor from credits you're taking for your major!

UW's Law Library has to be one of my favorite study spaces ever! I would consider this to be my "secret" study spot at UW because it's a bit outside of the bustling area of campus. The environment has a warm, peaceful feeling to it, with comfy chairs, lots of desk space, fewer students, and lots of air circulation. Especially in the spring when the sun is out, I love when bits of sunlight peek through the windows.

What do you love about the University of Washington?

I love that our campus is so close to the city. It's nice because you get the traditional sort of campus experience but you also get all that a big city has to offer, so it's the best of both worlds.

What advice do you have for new students?

It is okay to feel lost at first. Attending college is a big step and you need to make sure that you are focusing on being a well-rounded student which includes taking care of yourself. It is also important to reach out for help, whether it be an adult or peer on campus or even your hometown friends for support because it can be difficult trying to navigate everything on your own and then potentially being overwhelmed.

What advice do you have for new students?

Don't doubt yourself. You DO belong here. Academically, socially, actively, in every sense. Don't try so hard to put what you THINK is your best foot forward, just put your most natural, authentic foot forward. You'll find that it actually gets you a lot further, and a lot happier, leading you to the places you truly fit.

My favorite spot on campus is the Quad. Not only is the area beautiful when all of the cherry blossoms bloom, but it's also the perfect place to study or have a picnic when the sun is out.

What one thing would you say is a must-experience for new students?

Every new student should attend a Husky sport! Whether it is a football game, basketball game or gymnastics meet, Husky sports are a fun way to get involved and meet new people!

I love laying on the Quad on a sunny day in the Spring, underneath the cherry blossom trees. It's so peaceful and relaxing, just watching the clouds in the sky pass by.

What one thing would you say is a must-experience for new students?

Go to the Dawg Daze events that interest you in the beginning of the year! I met some of my closest friends through bonding over events, and it helped me get acquainted with the campus and what it has to offer. It's also a great way to start off your first few days before classes start!

My favorite spot on campus is the Nano building. The aesthetic of the interior is *chef's kiss* and a great place to study!

I really enjoy the location of where the University of Washington is. Football games are always amazing, but it's also close to so many cool outdoor activity possibilities such as skiing or hiking or just even exploring the city. I also love the recreational opportunity such as intramural sports.

My advice to a new student would be to remember that rejection is simply redirection. If things don't go as planned, try to keep an open mind and optimistic attitude as you redirect your efforts down a new path. Even though it's hard to believe sometimes, no one truly has it all figured out.

My advice for new students is that it is okay to change your mind! This can apply to many different aspects of life but is especially relevant when first coming to UW. You will be faced with so many new people and experiences that may have an influence on you. Use these novel interactions to grow yourself, which may include some changing.

What one thing would you say is a must-experience for new students?

Networking with your instructors and peers is a very valuable opportunity! It can be easy to trudge through life on campus without socializing, but the friendships I have forged and the people I have connected with have been the best part of my college experience by far. Be it in class, in the dorms, in the library, or wherever you are at, there are so many neat people for you to meet. Do not let the opportunity go to waste!

What advice do you have for new students?

Reach out! Whether you are in need of help or trying to join a club, most people are welcome to help you out (rather, they want to help you out). Since UW is a big university, it has so many resources that you are free to use. This also teaches us students that college is not just about taking classes and earning credits. It is what you make of it outside the classroom.

What one thing would you say is a must-experience for new students?

Any opportunity to build relationships with professors and students with similar academic interests I think is super important! I highly recommend looking for research, going to office hours, or even reaching out to a professor about how to continue with the topic even after the course has ended. I know of a couple really cool projects that started out that way.

Dawg Daze, RSOs, study sessions with classmates, any opportunity to meet people with similar interests that'll help you feel like you're a part of the UW community. Universities can be daunting at first, especially if you're coming in not knowing anyone else, but I guarantee you that there are others in similar positions who are looking to tackle the university experience together. Reach out to people!

My go-to has always been By George Cafe underneath Odegaard. It's a very casual place where you can work, chat with people, eat and drink, and the staff have always been awesome! It's also a nice stop-over if you have an "awkward" break between classes.

When campus opens, definitely go to Rick's Cafe - it's located on North Campus! They're a student run ice cream shop, but they also have milkshakes and cookies. I got to work there as a volunteer there before the pandemic hit and it was such a chill way to meet new people (and also get some free ice cream).
