Family Orientation is designed for parents and families, supporting their student as they begin their first year at UW. If you are a first-year student, please refer back to your confirmation email to select your personalized student agenda link.

Welcome

The offices of Parent & Family Programs and First Year Programs will kick off Family Orientation with an overview of the agenda and some tips for helping your student navigate their first year at UW. 

Review the Husky Guide (student publication) and the Parent & Family Guide for commonly used resources.

Academics & Course Registration

Academic advisers are among the most important connections your student can make. This session will introduce you to the academic adviser role and provide an overview of the general education requirements that students use to create their class schedules. 

If your student was directly admitted directly to the Allen School of Computer Science & Engineering, Informatics, Foster School of Business, Honors program, or Engineering Undeclared, advisers will provide an additional recording or a session on specific dates. Parent Conversations: Ask Me Anything

During this session, you will have the opportunity to join a breakout room based on at topic of your choosing:

  1. Financial Aid: Join representatives from the Office of Student Financial Aid to ask questions about how financial aid works. Other questions may include the cost of attendance, an overview of the different types of financial awards, requesting a revision to financial aid awards, understanding loans, or using aid to pay bills. 
  2. Student Leader Panel: Ask current students questions about their transition to UW.

Living On Campus

Regardless of where your student lives, there are resources to help them ensure their living environment supports their academic experience. Learn from Housing & Food Services about the services provided and critical move-in timelines. 

If your student plans to commute to campus, we look forward to welcoming them into the Commuter & Transfer Commons when they arrive on campus.
