I am pleased to announce several changes within Student Academic Services (SAS) in Undergraduate Academic Affairs. SAS includes First Year Programs, UAA Advising, and Academic Support Programs, all of which house multiple programs and people. The growth in our undergraduate population, along with the innovations that emerged from covid restrictions, has led to the expansion of our programs, services, and collaborations. Recent planning efforts have focused on our internal and external partnerships and priorities for the next few years.
We have made some position changes to acknowledge our collective priorities and the people who are leading our evolving work with students and partners.
First-year Experience Initiatives, Curriculum, and Engagement
- Matt Skirven, Associate Director, oversees Advising & Orientation and FYP’s operational logistics in First Year Programs.
- Carlos Guillen, Director of First Year Curriculum and Engagement, leads the learning process that new students engage in before, during, and after Advising & Orientation. Developing and maintaining systems that connect learning outcomes from A&O, through Dawg Daze, and into the first year's learning communities and engagement opportunities is critical to students’ transition and success.
- LeAnne Jones Wiles, Executive Director of First Year Programs and Strategic Initiatives, oversees first-year programming, strategy, and engagement, including UAA- and campus-wide initiatives and collaborations.
Advising Initiatives, Curriculum, and Policy
- Kyla Mayer, Associate Director, leads UAA Advising’s curricular efforts, including the Second Year Springboard programs.
- Joslin Boroughs, Director of Advising Initiatives and Partnerships, leads innovations and best practices within and beyond UAA Advising. In addition to developing adviser-focused resources, transfer-student policies and programs are a part of Joslin’s portfolio, including stewardship of Path to UW, our new partnership with Seattle Promise.
- Dan Feetham, Executive Director of Advising Curriculum and Policy, oversees strategy, direction, and initiatives for pre-major advising through UAA- and campus-wide collaborations.
Faculty Engagement and Academic Support
- Ryan Burt became the director of Academic Support Programs in the summer of 2020. In addition to overseeing both CLUE and Student Success Coaching, Ryan will take the lead on faculty engagement opportunities across Student Academic Services. His new working title is Director of Academic Support and Engagement.
