It's absolutely normal to feel overwhelmed when moving into university (whether you have a 5-year plan or not). UW has so much to offer that there's definitely a place for you out there, you just have to look for it! My best advice is that, if you can, try everything you want to (and I mean Everything). Give yourself time to find your groove! What one thing would you say is a must-experience for new students?

Grabbing a friend or two, or more, and walking up the Ave to try new foods is a must experience. Especially during that first week of a quarter before tuition is due and before too much homework is assigned!

What is your favorite spot on campus and why?

My favorite spot on campus is the Quad on the first sunny day of Spring Quarter. Everyone sits on the grass or the benches and it’s so beautiful outside! Seattle winters can be rough and the first sunny day of Spring Quarter is always a reminder for me of Seattle’s beauty and the UW community I’m grateful to be a part of!

What one thing would you say is a must-experience for new students?

Always try out new things even if you don't know what the outcome could be. Regardless of whether it's good or bad, it's an experience and that means you can learn something from it. Honestly, during my time at UW an experience that is a must-try and something I should've done sooner is join a mentorship program - I am in ISMP but there's so many out there for you to choose from.

What do you love about the University of Washington?

Besides the really pretty campus, I really love just how many opportunities there are to do research and do really just about anything that you're passionate about. Whatever your niche interest is, there's almost definitely some way to get involved in it around here. I'm also really grateful just how inclusive this campus is. There's certainly a long way to go, but places like the Q Center and the ECC have made the transition here a lot easier for me.

What advice do you have for new students?

Never be afraid to answer a question. It can be very intimidating, especially in big lecture halls that you have never been a part of, but there is no harm in trying. Your learning is very important, and even if you answer a question incorrectly, you can learn from that. You will probably learn more from an incorrect answer.

What is your favorite spot on campus and why?

I love the 3rd floor of the Art Building. They put up Art student's paintings and artwork and I love going up there and looking at what everyone is working on. They also have multiple decapitated statues up there that emit an ominous presence which I find quite intriguing.

What one thing would you say is a must-experience for new students?

Any type of involvement can go a long way - even virtually or from a masked, 6-foot distance. I highly recommend forcing yourself to try at least one thing no matter how corny you think it sounds. There's so many options, from joining an RSO to attending a baking workshop or even joining a study group. There's something for everyone and I guarantee you'll vibe with at least one person, even if you don't meet a best friend.

What one thing would you say is a must-experience for new students?

Studying abroad! I've been lucky to have the opportunity to study abroad two times - in Rome and Barcelona. I loved being able to immerse myself in a new environment and experience the food, culture, and histories of different places. It was also a fun way to meet people I wouldn't normally see in my classes.

What do you love about the University of Washington?

The thing I love most about the University of Washington is how beautiful it is. I've gotten used to it and taken it for granted, but sometimes I'll look out my dorm window and see the space needle and the mountains in the distance, and I'll remember how cool it is that I live here. Being from Texas, I just think it's so cool to be surrounded by trees and mountains everywhere you look. This campus is really beautiful, and I love it.

What advice do you have for new students?

The number one piece of advice that I have for new students is to get involved super early on campus! Get involved in anything and everything that seems interesting to you, whether or not it related to your "major" or what you're studying. Getting involved has allowed me to expand my network of friendships and learn so much more about the world and the things I'm interested in - joining student senate was actually the reason I ended up switching my major from bio to law, societies and justice! I also think it is important to have a balance in college, especially because the first quarter and first year in general can be so overwhelming (it is necessary to have some time devoted to things other than studying:)
