Frequently Asked Questions

What is General Studies 199: The University Community?

General Studies 199 is a course facilitated by an experienced undergraduate student that is designed to help you adjust to life on campus both socially and academically. Every FIG/TrIG contains a section of this course. Students enrolled will be completing a variety of activities and experiences. Visit our page on GEN ST 199 for more information.

What FIGs/TrIGs are available?

Click on Search open FIGs/TrIGs at the top of this page, but please note that this listing is only updated once or twice a day and there is a possiblity that a FIG/TrIG you see is actually closed.

If I find a FIG I want to register for, do I have to take all of the courses in it?

Yes! A FIG is a package deal. However, like TrIGs, some FIGs are standalone classes.

How do I add a FIG/TrIG? How do I drop a FIG/TrIG?

It's very easy to add or drop a FIG/TrIG from your schedule. In the FIG/TrIG listing there is one Schedule Line Number (SLN) for each FIG/TrIG. Just use that number with the web registration tool that you've learned about at Advising & Registration. The SLN for each FIG will add or drop (depending on what you're doing) not only the GEN ST 199 class, but all the other courses associated with the FIG.

What if the FIG/TrIG I want is closed?

Feel free to continue checking this website, but know that it's a good idea to register for a backup schedule since there is no guarantee that the FIG/TrIG you want will open up. Also, there are a lot of FIGs/TrIGs with similar classes, so make sure you look through all of the FIGs/TrIGs with themes or classes that interest you. There are no waiting lists for FIGs/TrIGs.

Are FIGs/TrIGs offered any time besides autumn quarter?

No. FIGs/TrIGs are only offered for autum quarter, so take advantage of this opportunity!

I have a lot of Running Start and/or AP credit. What FIG should I take?

Many students with Running Start and/or AP credit take FIGs. You should be careful, of course, to not enroll in any classes that you already have credit for, and you can consult with an adviser if you have any concerns about the courses you're registering for.

I have a question that isn't answered here. What should I do?

You should talk with an adviser or peer adviser if you're at Summer Advising. Or, you may contact the FIG/TrIG program directly at: figs@u.washington.edu, trigs@u.washington.edu. Please include your student number in your email!
