Become a 2012 FIG/TrIG Leader
For over twenty years Freshman and Transfer Interest Group Leaders have been the key to giving up to 70% of the incoming class this amazing opportunity. Every winter, we recruit current University of Washington undergraduates to become FIG/TrIG Leaders. FIG/TrIG Leaders work with First Year Programs staff to develop curriculum and activities for General Studies 199: The University Community, a class included in every FIG/TrIG cluster class and standalone class. The General Studies 199 is facilitated entirely by our peer instructors. Prospective FIG/TrIG Leaders:
- Want an inspiring leadership position.
- Want an encouraging teaching opportunity.
- Want to gain valuable experience for the future.
- Want to pass on unique knowledge to help ease a challenging transition.
This experience gives you the chance to earn course credit while enhancing skills that will assist you in future endeavors. In addition, you will take part in a program that has become a significant part of the UW student experience! - January 18-26 : Application Workshops: Visit these application workshops to find out more information about the program.
- Wednesday 1/18: 12:30pm-1:20pm in MGH 258

- January 31 at 5pm (PST): FIG/TrIG Leader application deadline
- February 1-8 : Review of applications
- February 9 : Selection of individual interview candidates
- February 10 : Candidates sign up for an individual interview
- February 13-17: Individual Interviews in First Year Programs Office Mary Gates Hall 120, if abroad you can Skype in.
- February 22: Selection of FIG/TrIG leaders (these students will be required to enroll in Gen Studies 470:FIG/TrIG Leader Training course. The course meets Tues., Wed., or Thurs., 2:30pm-4:20pm during spring quarter. You must be able to attend the 470 class).
About the FIG/TrIG Leader Position and General Studies 199
- FIGs are groups of 20 to 25 new UW freshmen co-enrolled in a cluster of classes for the fall quarter.
- TrIGs are groups of 20 to 25 new UW transfer students who take one class together for the fall quarter.
- Each FIG/TrIG includes a section of General Studies 199: The University Community, a course facilitated by a FIG/TrIG Leader, an experienced UW undergraduate who serves as a teacher and mentor.
- The purpose of General Studies 199 is to help students understand what the UW expects of them, to help students understand what they can expect of the UW, and to take active steps toward maximizing their educational experiences. It is structured around topics such as social issues, diversity, academic planning, campus resources and major exploration.
FIG/TrIG Leader Responsibilities
- Spring quarter training (explained more below)
- Teaching a section of General Studies 199 in autumn quarter. FIG/TrIG Leaders are responsible for preparing each class session (the curricular framework for General Studies 199 is provided by the FIG/TrIG Program, but each leader must prepare a lesson plan building on that framework, most of this will be done during training.
- Pre-quarter training (Fri, Sept 21) and a pre-quarter meeting (Sun, Sept 23)
- Attend a 50min class (every other week) for FIG/TrIG Leaders during autumn quarter in addition to teaching GEN ST 199
- Must check email frequently!
FIG/TrIG Leader Training Information
- Introduction Meeting: This meeting is mandatory. If you cannot attend due to class or being abroad winter quarter, we will schedule an alternate time.
- Monday, March 5th from 6:00pm-7:25pm-Returning FIG/TrIG Leaders
- Monday, March 5th, from 7:30pm-9:30pm-New FIG/TrIG Leaders or
- Tuesday March 6th from 6:00pm-8:00pm-New FIG/TrIG Leaders
- Spring Quarter-GEN ST 470: FIG/TrIG Leader training class. This class will consist of intensive training in public speaking, discussion facilitation, lesson plan development, and leadership. The three available class times are listed below.
- Tuesday from 2:30-4:20pm or
- Wednesday from 2:30-4:20pm or
- Thursday from 2:30-4:20pm
- Pre Quarter Training and Husky Kick-Off: All FIG/TrIG Leaders will reconvene at the beginning of autumn quarter for the pre-quarter training and Husky Kick-Off.
- Friday, September 21st from 8:00am-5:00pm-Pre-Quarter Training
- Sunday, September 23rd from Noon-5:00pm-Kick-Off
- Autumn Quarter-GEN ST 470 & GEN ST 199:Training continues throughout autumn quarter, consisting of biweekly small-group FIG/TrIG Leader meeting (times vary) and of course your will be teaching your own class, General Studies 199: The University Community.
- Credits: FIG/TrIG Leaders are eligible to receive 3 credits for GEN ST 470 in Spring Quarter and 3 credits for GEN ST 470 in Autumn Quarter.
