Want to explore Seattle, make new friends and get to know a University of Washington faculty/staff member before the start of school? Join a Husky Adventure and you will find yourself learning all that the greater Seattle area has to offer. Husky Adventures are one-day small-group trips offered during August and September. Click on any of the titles below to learn more about trips offered in 2013.

• Soccer Mania

  

  Description: Sounders Match, Saturday, Sept. 8th! Professional Soccer in Seattle is a must see. Professor Joe Sisneros and Aaron Lykken will show you the ropes on how to become a true Seattle Soccer Fan! Enjoy the game along with concessions that are included in the price of this adventure. If you haven’t been to a Major League Soccer game, then you will be in for a treat when you see all 38,000 fans cheering for our Sounders soccer team! Come join us!

• Theo Chocolate Factory Tour

  

  Description: The eclectic Fremont neighborhood is so close to the University, yet it seems like a different world. While studying at the University, it can be very useful to know about a few destinations to take out-of-town friends or just kick back. Fremont is one of those places that tops the list! In this Husky adventure we'll visit a few landmark statues, sample some Thai food, and take a tour at Theo chocolate factory. 

• Ferries, Islands, and Ice Cream, Oh my!

   

  Description: Join Susan Inman and Tory Brundage from the School of Public Health on a scenic ferry ride from downtown Seattle to Bainbridge Island on the Kitsap Peninsula. Enjoy the beauty, fresh air and uniqueness of western Washington with a ride on the most used ferry system in the world. We will explore Bainbridge, have a picnic on the beach, and enjoy Ice Cream at a local shop.

• Wing Luke Art Museum

  

  Description: Come explore the rich history of Asian Pacific American Experience at Wing Luke Museum. Founder, Wing Luke believed that the culture and traditions of Chinese and other Asian immigrants should be preserved and taught, Wing envisioned a place to present the history and important issues of Asian Americans. The Wing Luke Asian Museum was founded to fulfill that vision and is one of the city’s hotspots nestled in the International District just south of downtown. Finally enjoy some good food in the International District after the museum.

• Marine Life, Locks, and Local Cuisine

  

  Description: For those new to Seattle especially, the city's bus system is an extremely accessible way to see some unique culture from multiple species at once. Leaving from campus and using a city bus, we will quickly journey to the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks, where the waterways of Seattle are controlled and where the migrating salmon are still coming through. The Locks are a one-of-a-kind portal into a city as the only salt-fresh barrier of its kind on the globe. Plus, a stop to eat in Ballard is an excellent bonus.

• Food and Culture in Columbia City

   Description: Colombia City is a diverse neighborhood just south of downtown Seattle that is rich with great food, entertainment, and great people. Join this trip to get some great food, check out a very popular Seattle area park, and learn about a great place to relax and enjoy a diverse culture.

• Explore the Woodland Park Zoo

  

  Description:Join Clay in touring one of the finest zoos in the country. Woodland Park Zoo is famed for creating revolutionary naturalistic exhibits that began a shift that changed the face of zoos worldwide. This is one of the best locations in the city. The zoo has won numerous major awards. Enjoy a great Seattle experience and finish it off with a trip to the infamous Seattle burger institution, Dick’s Drive-In.

• Edmonds Marina: Views and Invertebrates

  

  Description: Take a trip to the beautiful Edmonds Marina overlooking Puget Sound and the Olympic Peninsula. In addition to the gorgeous views, the most interesting and beautiful marine invertebrates live just beneath the surface of the water on the sides of the docks - everything from sponges and anemones to feather-duster worms and even sea squirts, which are close relatives of us! This trip is one of the favorites of the students in my Invertebrate Zoology course, so whether you are interested in a career in the sciences or are leaning toward a major in the Arts, you will still have a great time. Finish the trip with a stop at Rori’s Restaurant, an excellent local eatery in Edmonds.

• Seattle Art Exhibits (College of Engineering Direct Only)

  

  Description: Our Art Expedition will begin by catching a bus to downtown Seattle from the UW Paul Allen Center to the Seattle Art Museum (SAM). After seeing the exhibits at SAM - we will stop for lunch and then embark on an excursion via bus to Seattle's Sculpture Park - which has amazing enormous sculptures - and provides fabulous vistas of Seattle and the waterfront. Students will have time for Frisbee - relaxing - and getting acquainted. Wear comfortable shoes, and check the weather forecast for appropriate attire. It can get a little cool along the water.

• Theo Chocolate Tour (Business Freshman Direct Only)

  

  Description: Get to know your future classmates and Foster School staff on this business-oriented tour of the delicious Theo Chocolate Factory in Fremont. Wrap up the day with lunch at a local restaurant and an exploration of the Fremont neighborhood.Trip Leader Thoughts:Business is everywhere, and it is evidently so in Seattle. We’re known for our coffee and computers, but not everyone knows that we are home to the best chocolate you can imagine. We can't wait to share Theo Chocolate with you as you begin your journey at the UW!

• Alpine Wildflower Hike

  

  Description: Be ready for a day-long adventure on the Pacific Crest Trail. We will travel by van to Mount Rainier National Park, park at Tipsoo Lake and take an easy four-mile hike around Naches Peak. We will pass alpine lakes, snow fields and high meadows blazing with wildflowers. Rounding the forested, western side of the ridge, you will never forget the sudden appearance of Mt. Rainier! If we walk quietly, we will see wildlife.

• Hike Mt. Rainier – Sunrise Trail (Honors Program Only)

  

  Description: Join two of your Honors advisers (Brook & Laura) and fellow honors students for an all day hike at the Mt. Rainer National Park. Get to know one another while exploring the magnificent mountain that many of us only see from a distance. No hiking experience is necessary, but participants should be in good health and wear shoes and clothes appropriate for hiking on rugged and sometimes steep terrain.

• Mt. Rainer - Paradise

   

  Description:Just fifty miles from Seattle – but a world away – is Mount Rainier. Spend the day hiking along some of the most amazing trails in the Pacific Northwest with Grant Kollet and new Husky students. No hiking experience is necessary, but participants should be in good health and wear shoes and clothes appropriate for hiking on rugged and sometimes steep terrain.

• Kayaking: Port Susan Bay

  Description:Interested in kayaking in the sea or visiting the islands near Seattle? Travel to Camano Island, a small town in western Washington. Bettina Katz will take you kayaking in Port Susan Bay and you’ll have the opportunity to view the islands from the water.

• Kayaking: Lake Union

  

  Description: This Husky Adventure allows you to cruise Seattle’s Lake Union by Kayak. Check out the nearby arboretum, and get perhaps the best view of Seattle’s skyline - from the water. Join Aaron Adiam, Chanira, and other incoming students for an afternoon of paddling, fun, and food. No kayaking experience required.
