• Description

  The Commuter Commons Assistants (CCAs) are responsible for making sure that the Commons provides a welcoming and resource-rich environment for the diverse population of commuter students at the University of Washington. The Commuter Commons is a space to connect with each other and build community. The Commons also serves as a study and meeting space while commuter students are on campus. Through collaboration with campus partners, students can also find resources like academic advising, tutoring and career advising.

  As a staff within the Commuter Commons, the CCAs actively forms meaningful relationships with and among Commuter Commons students. They work with other Commuter Commons staff to facilitate  programming that supports students’ needs and interests; and they performs various operational duties to keep the space functioning smoothly as a campus resource. 

• Responsibilities

  Administrative Responsibilities

  • Work collaboratively with Commuter Commons and Office of First Year Programs staff to support the daily operations of the space.
  • Ensure that the Commons space is kept clean and appropriate at all times
  • Become familiar with the needs of commuting students, and answer student inquiries as needed.
  • When appropriate, serve as a liaison with campus departments and student service units to provide information or to answer questions about the space or other commuter-related issues.
  • Perform additional tasks as assigned by Assistant Manager and Program Manager
  • Attend all Commuter Commons staff meetings

  
  

  Program Development Responsibilities

  • Plan, publicize, implement and assess a minimum of two high quality programs that build community; seeking feedback from Commuter Commons staff and commuter students during and after the planning process
  • Perform additional tasks in support of specific programs or events, as assigned by the Assistant Manager and Program Manager
  • Demonstrate reliability in completing tasks and meeting deadlines
  • Attend Commuter Commons events as needed in order to support the space, and your fellow CCA staff members’ events 

• Commitments

  CCAs must:

  • Commit to this position for the full academic year (September-June)
  • Be available during Commuter Commons hours including occasional early morning (8:00 am) and late evening shifts (7:00 pm)
  • Attend regular Commuter Commons Staff Trainings/Meetings
  • Be able to work at least 15 hours and up to 19.5 hours weekly during Autumn, Winter and Spring quarters

• Qualifications

  • Full-time undergraduate student status
  • Minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.75 upon application, and maintained throughout tenure in the position. Any exceptions must be approved by the CC Program Manager and result in a specific alternative arrangement with regard to GPA
  • Familiarity with campus resources, departments, offices and services available at the University
  • Professional communication skills, and the ability to serve as a positive and professional representative of FYP when communicating with other campus departments and offices
  • Familiarity with the mission and operations of the Office of First Year Programs
  • Energetic interest in fostering community among commuter students
  • Willingness and ability to work independently and take initiative
  • Enthusiasm for engaging with people; and learning from them and with them

• Remuneration

  • $10.00 per hour starting September 25, 2013
  • Please note: we have committed to funding your position for the length of this program, but note that employment is always contingent on available funds in our departmental budget.
