Residential FIGs

Connecting Classes and Community
The Residential FIG program in Lander Hall builds upon the strength of our Freshman Interest Group (FIG) program by providing students with a unique first year living-learning experience. Twenty two students will co-enroll in two high demand core-courses and a two-credit seminar called “The University Community,” taught by an upperclassman that explores the many opportunities available to students at the UW. Students enrolling in Residential FIGs will live in Lander Hall, The First Year Experience Hall, which they share with non-FIG students. Residential FIG students live close enough to be able to easily form study groups and connect with other students will similar interests, but not so close that they limit their circle of friends.

Student Quotes

“A great way to meet people during my first quarter on campus.”

“Living together and taking the same classes together was the best part of the program.”

“The tight-knit community was pretty cool. It was also really nice to all be living together when studying for a midterm or final because the lounge just became everyone’s study spot.”

“I loved this program. It really helped me feel comfortable and meet new people.”

The Residential FIG Program contains some of the most sought after courses for incoming freshman: Chemistry 142, Economics 200, English 111/131, and Communications 201. Residential FIGs provide social and academic support to bolster success during the first year at UW. Each Residential FIG has a Residential FIG Leader, an advanced student who teaches Gen Studies 199: The University Community, assists in forming study groups, assists with registration, promotes social (fun) engagement, and directs you to campus resources. Additionally, Residential FIG participants will have priority access to several special events, seminars, and fieldtrips throughout the year.
